Open-Island, the upcycling swimming island

"The demand for swimming islands increases with sea levels," says artist Joy Lohmann.

Together with German and Indian activists, he developed the "makers4humanity", a modular island building system. From globalized affluent waste, they build a life raft, a swimming garden, a houseboat or an energy platform. Garbage from rivers and forests, from the beach or roadside is collected. In this way they transform problematic materials into components for solution platforms. The cooperative MakerCamps also bring together local groups who learn from and with each other during the co-creative island building process. Much can be achieved in community, especially to enable a sustainable lifestyle for the benefit of all and our planet. The inspiring Open-Islands already swim in India, Thailand and Germany. The next projects are a floating KlimaLabor in Hanover and an international (open-source) knowledge platform for island building and self-sufficient, sustainable living in community.
