Liina Klauss

Liina Klauss is a German installation artist who deals with visual and conceptual perceptions of waste, especially marine pollution. Since 2007 she has been living in Southeast Asia, the region where 60% of plastic waste ends up in the ocean. Her work translates pollution into screaming colors, frightening abundance and unexpected beauty.

Liina encourages people to get involved in the most direct and tangible way possible by confronting them directly with environmental pollution. "These experiences of creative action are tools for transformation and connection and ultimately for change", and she is certain: "Art is great. Making art is bigger."

For Out of Proportion No.2 the participants will be invited to an unspoiled beach in Bali. The direct confrontation with the extent of marine pollution in the midst of beautiful nature leads to feelings of shock, shame, disgust and anger. Liina believes that these emotions can be transformed through creativity. The participants collect 1200 flip-flops, 240 toothpaste containers and toothbrushes, 330 pieces of polystyrene, 400 plastic straws, 37 PET bottles and 310 plastic spoons and forks and arrange them into a huge mandala. The environment is changed in a positive, creative and even beautiful way and not only a visible result is created, but also joy, connectedness and peace. Liina says: "Curating beaches in this way is in no way the solution, but it is a way to heal our trauma of abusing nature. When we are at peace with ourselves, we can begin to find sustainable solutions.

At the moment Liina is in her own studio in lockdown and works on mosaics of flip-flop soles. She is curious to see how these new pictures will be taken, which you can now "actually hang on the wall".
